Reducing leakages of nutrients in fertiliser production
Identifying nutrient leakage points in fertiliser production and transportation processes in the Baltic Sea.
The project started in January 2022, and it evolved as an important part of the port project. The goal of the production project is to identify all possible leakage points and address them to prevent eutrophication.
To this point, a few possible areas of improvement have been identified in close cooperation with fertiliser producers, port representatives, and business consultants. They include quay raw materials transportation systems, absorption plants (the system of neutralising waste from the fertiliser production e.g., phosphorus, nitrogen, and fluorine), and phosphogypsum stacks (large waste sites located mostly near fertiliser factories).
Within this project, we aim to develop a cooperation framework with large fertiliser manufacturers and port operators in the Baltic Sea region.
The project addresses SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), SDG 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure), SDG 14 (life below water) and SDG 17 (partnership for the goals).
