Driving reed-based soil solutions forward

Together with Axfoundation we hosted a dynamic roundtable at Torsåker Farm, exploring reed as a sustainable soil improvement alternative. Stakeholders, including researchers and entrepreneurs, discussed investment needs, logistics, and innovative business models for reed-based soil. Additionally, a workshop was held in Helsinki with the John Nurminen Foundation, which brought together experts to support reed harvesters and enhance value chain efficiency. This summer, RFTB will harvest reed in Vaxholm and Norrtälje, collaborating with Skärgårdsstiftelsen, Statens Fastighetsverk, and Vaxholm municipality. The harvested reed will be used in pilot testing, such as for soil amendment.

Roundtable Discussion on Reed-Based Soil Solutions
In Q2 RFTB organized a roundtable discussion together with Axfoundation at their Center for Future Food – Torsåker Farm. (https://www.axfoundation.se/en) The day explored reed as a sustainable alternative for soil improvement, focusing on the potential of replacing peat in soil production.

Stakeholders from the entire value chain, including researchers, soil companies, harvesters and entrepreneurs participated in creative discussions. Key questions included what it would take to invest in or use reed-based soil and how participants could contribute to developing its value chain.

Discussions highlighted investing in reed-based soil requires streamlined logistics, consistent raw material supply, competitive pricing, and simplified procedures for permits. Key actions include engaging stakeholders and developing creative business models. Experts can contribute with innovations and storytelling and municipalities can play a crucial role as both landowners and maintenance management. The discussion concluded with a shared vision of advancing reed-based soil solutions through collaboration, innovation, and strategic promotion.

Helsinki Workshop on Reed Harvesting
Additionally, RFTB, in partnership with the John Nurminen Foundation, organized a workshop in Helsinki. This event brought together reed harvesters, machine developers, logistics experts, and entrepreneurs from Finland, Sweden, Denmark, the UK, and the Netherlands. The focus was on supporting the needs of reed harvesters and enhancing efficiency across the value chain.

Reed harvest in Q3
RFTB is planning for the summer harvest in Vaxholm and Norrtälje this August, in collaboration with Skärgårdsstiftelsen, Statens Fastighetsverk, and Vaxholm municipality. Post-harvest, the reed will be used in pilot testing, such as for soil amendment.
