Reducing leakages of nutrients in fertiliser production

This project is a spin-off from current efforts surrounding port operations, with a focus on addressing environmental challenges in fertiliser production. The project is currently primarily active in Poland. It seeks to cover the entire fertilizer production process, starting from the moment raw materials, like fertilizer or phosphoric rock, are transported from the port, with a focus on managing production operations and handling waste effectively. Within this project, we aim to develop a cooperation framework with large fertiliser manufacturers and port operators in the Baltic Sea region.

Close cooperation with fertiliser producers, port representatives, and business consultants has so far led to the identification of several areas where we have the possibility to improve the situation. So far Race For The Baltic has been involved in:

Quay raw materials transportation systems: Where fertiliser materials are moved from ships to storage or processing facilities.

Cleaning equipment: Regular cleaning of quays and production sites using sweepers and similar equipment to reduce phosphorus and nitrogen leakage into the Baltic Sea.

However, more areas will be discussed and we see great potential in moving on with decreasing phosphorus emissions from the actual production process as well.

Project Activities

The project follows a refined three-step approach:

  • Identify leakage points: Conduct a thorough assessment to pinpoint areas where nutrient leakage, such as phosphorus and nitrogen, could occur during material handling and production.

  • Build relationships and networks: Engage with key stakeholders, including fertilizer producers, port authorities, and environmental specialists, to foster collaboration. Building trust and strong relationships is crucial, though it may take time to establish the mutual understanding needed for long-term success.

  • Start the project: Together with relevant stakeholders above, support in defining and implementing solutions. Regular monitoring and adjustments will be necessary to ensure the project’s sustainability and effectiveness.

Status

Active.

Project Goals

The goal of the Production project is to identify potential nutrient leakage points throughout the fertiliser production and transportation processes, particularly in the Baltic Sea region, and to mitigate their impact on eutrophication.

Achieved Results

  • Cleaning machines in two port terminals within fertilizer factories

  • Prevention covers installations planned for 2024

  • Regular meetings and strong cooperation to find most suitable projects based on framework agreements

Sustainable Development Goals

The project addresses SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), SDG 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure), SDG 14 (life below water) and SDG 17 (partnership for the goals).
